  • The False Economy of DIY Design: Why Canva Isn’t Always the Bargain It Seems

The False Economy of DIY Design: Why Canva Isn’t Always the Bargain It Seems

We do get it—Canva is quick, ‘free’, and kind of fun to use (in the beginning). For many small businesses, it can feel like a smart way to save money on design. But here’s the truth: Canva can also be a false economy.

    Time Is Money

Here’s an example: Let’s say you need a flyer or a social media graphic. You’ll probably spend 2 or 3 hours (minimum) watching YouTube videos, choosing templates, adjusting fonts, changing colours, resizing bits… only to end up with something that looks “fine”. What if you have to do this three or four times a month? That’s over a day of your working time gone—time you could’ve spent actually on, or growing, your business. How much could you earn in that time?

    The Hidden Risks

    • Generic visuals: Do you really want your brand to look unmistakably ‘Canva’ed’?
    • Inconsistent branding: Canva templates aren’t specific to your brand, so every time you adapt them to your visuals, you run the risk of them looking higgledy-piggledy.
    • Licensing issues: Some Canva elements are not free to use commercially, so if you use the wrong one, you could face copyright problems.
    • Print disasters: Do you know your CMYK from your RGB? What are bleed settings? Does resolution matter? Canva doesn’t always output its files properly for print, so there’s a chance of needing reprints, or of having pixelated images.

    Longer-Term Value

Working with a designer means you get branding and materials that are consistent, thought through and attractive to your audience. You’re not just paying for a pretty layout—you’re investing in how your business is seen.

So yes, Canva might be ‘free’ now—but is it really saving you anything?

Grafica by the Sea can help you get it right the first time—saving you time, stress, and money in the long run.

Do you know a business that communicates as clearly as this pond water?

Have you come across a business whose message is as clear as murky water?

You: “Do you have a card please?”
Them: “Um, I’ve only got this one – sorry, it’s not great and is a bit grubby. I need to get some more done but I haven’t got round to it. Actually, I really need to get a logo too…”

You: “What do you do? I couldn’t quite tell from your presentation?”
Them: “Er, well, I, um save people money…”
    You: “Great – how?”
    Them: “Kdja kdmf lskd lksamfdlkml………”

Them: “I’m not getting anything from my brochure – not sure why I have it really…”

Us: Effective design isn’t just about something looking nice – it’s about underpinning a reputation that has taken a long time to build and getting the right message across to the right people!

  • Choosing the Right Typeface for Your Business

Choosing the Right Typeface for Your Business

Typography: One of Our Favourite Bits of Graphic Design

When it comes to building a brand, the details matter—and typography is one of the most powerful tools in your visual toolkit. At Grafica by the Sea, choosing the right typeface is one of our absolute favourite parts of the design process. Why? Because it’s where personality, clarity and creativity all come together.

    Why Typeface Matters

Your typeface says a lot about your business before a single word is read. A classic serif font can convey heritage and trust—great for law firms or heritage brands—while a modern sans-serif communicates freshness and innovation, which can be perfect for start-ups, creative industries or eco-conscious brands. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with mixing it up a bit, but you get what we mean.

    Prioritise Legibility

Looks matter, but legibility comes first. Whether it’s a logo, website, or packaging, your font needs to be readable across all formats—from a smartphone screen to a printed leaflet, stylish should never mean hard to read.

    Consider Tone and Audience

Are you fun and friendly? Professional and precise? Your typeface should reflect your brand’s voice and values. A whimsical script might suit an artisan bakery, but not an accountancy firm. Knowing your audience is key to making the right choice. And a note on Comic Sans – it was designed for children because of the formation of the ‘a’. Please don’t make us use it anywhere else!

    Pair Wisely

Using more than one typeface can bring contrast and hierarchy—but too many fonts can look messy. We usually recommend one primary typeface with a complementary secondary option to keep your brand clean and cohesive – and never more than 3!

    Trust the Process

Typography is more than just picking a pretty font. It’s storytelling, tone-setting and identity-defining. You can probably now tell how passionate Brad is about type—whether you’re launching a new brand or freshening up your visual identity, he’ll help you find the perfect fit.

  • How Great Design Can Boost Your Small Business

    Because First Impressions Matter

At Grafica by the Sea, we believe design isn’t just about looking good—it’s about making an impact. For small businesses, great design can be the difference between being noticed… or overlooked.

    1. Builds Trust and Credibility

A polished, professional look tells customers you mean business. Whether it’s your logo, website or packaging, great design helps you appear established and reliable—even if you’re just starting out.

    2. Makes You Memorable

Good design sticks. From a distinctive brand colour to a unique font choice, thoughtful visuals help people remember your name—and where to come back for more.

    3. Communicates Clearly

Design is about more than aesthetics. It guides your audience, highlights what matters, and makes it easier for people to understand who you are and what you offer.

    4. Sets You Apart

In a crowded market, standing out is essential. Great design gives you a competitive edge and helps you connect with your ideal customers.
