  • The False Economy of DIY Design: Why Canva Isn’t Always the Bargain It Seems

The False Economy of DIY Design: Why Canva Isn’t Always the Bargain It Seems

We do get it—Canva is quick, ‘free’, and kind of fun to use (in the beginning). For many small businesses, it can feel like a smart way to save money on design. But here’s the truth: Canva can also be a false economy.

    Time Is Money

Here’s an example: Let’s say you need a flyer or a social media graphic. You’ll probably spend 2 or 3 hours (minimum) watching YouTube videos, choosing templates, adjusting fonts, changing colours, resizing bits… only to end up with something that looks “fine”. What if you have to do this three or four times a month? That’s over a day of your working time gone—time you could’ve spent actually on, or growing, your business. How much could you earn in that time?

    The Hidden Risks

    • Generic visuals: Do you really want your brand to look unmistakably ‘Canva’ed’?
    • Inconsistent branding: Canva templates aren’t specific to your brand, so every time you adapt them to your visuals, you run the risk of them looking higgledy-piggledy.
    • Licensing issues: Some Canva elements are not free to use commercially, so if you use the wrong one, you could face copyright problems.
    • Print disasters: Do you know your CMYK from your RGB? What are bleed settings? Does resolution matter? Canva doesn’t always output its files properly for print, so there’s a chance of needing reprints, or of having pixelated images.

    Longer-Term Value

Working with a designer means you get branding and materials that are consistent, thought through and attractive to your audience. You’re not just paying for a pretty layout—you’re investing in how your business is seen.

So yes, Canva might be ‘free’ now—but is it really saving you anything?

Grafica by the Sea can help you get it right the first time—saving you time, stress, and money in the long run.

    Let’s create something brilliant together.

  • Is your business invisible?

    Is your business invisible?

By that, we mean ‘do people in your target audience know you are there?’

Here’s a Handy Print Design Checklist for Small Businesses to help cut through the noise made by other companies:

Do you have, or could you do with the following things to make your company stand out:

    • Business cards (an absolute must for networking)
    • Thank you cards or postcards (a really nice touch that always go down well)
    • Flyers / menus / leaflets / brochures (learn about your audience before splashing out)
    • Exhibition banners or panels (why wouldn’t you?)
    • Printed guidelines / manuals / installation guides (not always the prettiest, but still crucial in certain industries)
    • Stickers / swing tags / gift wrap (you can even make these nice enough to keep)
    • Letterheads and business stationery (e.g. printed forms or checklists are best when they match business cards and letterheads)
    • Product packaging or labels (to fit your audience and price point)
    • Magazines / newsletters / books (we especially LOVE designing these!)
    • Branded merch (the more original, the better)
    • Custom printed envelopes (perhaps with extra messaging)
    • QR codes to integrate into your website or socials

We love to think about the design’s feel, as well as the paper’s texture and any special finishes (like foils, embossing, or matte lamination/gloss (spot) UVs). Print should feel as good as it looks, so if you’d like to see some examples, please get in touch. But, please be warned, not everything works for every purpose, so a bit of planning can work wonders for getting the most out of marketing budgets.

    Let’s create something brilliant together.

  • Is print dead?

    Is print dead?

    Spoiler: Not even close.

With everything ‘going digital’, a common question we get asked is —is print dead? At Grafica by the Sea, we say absolutely not! In fact, print design is quietly making a comeback—and for good reason. The online world is very overwhelming. We love designing for print!

There’s something special about holding a well-designed piece in your hands. A beautifully printed business card, a tactile brochure, or special packaging can leave a deeper, more memorable impression than a fleeting social scroll ever could. Print makes people pause. It feels intentional.

For small businesses, it’s also a brilliant way to stand out. While everyone else is crowding inboxes, you could be popping a postcard through a customer’s letterbox that they actually want to keep. The trend has shifted: high volume marketing has gone digital, which is why your in box is so clogged; but smaller run, more unusual materials are on the up – and they stay on people’s desks.

And the best bit? Print and digital don’t have to compete! When they are designed together for both—like with QR codes or consistent branding, the result can be greater than the sum of the parts.

At Grafica, we still get excited about paper stocks and print finishes (yep, we’re those people). Whether it’s a one-off flyer, business cards or marketing materials, we love helping businesses bring their brand into the real world.

So no, print isn’t dead. It’s just evolved—and it’s still very much alive and kicking on our studio shelves.

  • What to Expect When Working with a Graphic Design Agency

What to Expect When Working with a Graphic Design Agency

Your Creative Journey with a designer

If you’ve never worked with a graphic design agency before, it can feel a little unknown—exciting, but maybe also a bit daunting. At Grafica by the Sea, we believe great design starts with great communication, and we’re here to make the process collaborative and genuinely enjoyable.

    1. A Friendly Chat (No Jargon, We Promise)

First, we get to know you. What’s your business all about? Who are your ideal customers? What do you want your brand to say? This discovery stage helps us understand your goals so we can design with purpose, not just polish.

    2. Ideas and Inspiration

Next, we’ll start pulling together initial ideas—moodboards, typefaces, colours, and design concepts that reflect your brand personality. You’ll start to see your brand’s visual direction taking shape.

    3. Creative Collaboration

Design should be a two-way street. You’ll have the chance to give feedback and guide the creative process. Whether you’re hands-on or happy to leave it to us, we’ll keep you in the loop with clear, honest communication.

    4. Design That Works (and Looks Beautiful)

Once the concepts are refined, we bring everything together into a final, polished design. Whether it’s a logo, or full brand identity, leaflet, packaging or website, the end result will be something that works just as well in the real world as it does on screen.

    5. Ongoing Support

Our relationship doesn’t end when the final files are delivered. We’re here if you need updates, extra assets or a creative eye down the line. We love seeing the brands we help grow and evolve.

At Grafica by the Sea, we make good design feel easy.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or giving your visuals a refresh, we’re here to bring your ideas to life—with clarity, creativity and a dash of seaside charm.

  • The Art of Hidden Messaging: How Graphic Designers Can Inspire Brand Confidence

The Art of Hidden Messaging: How Graphic Designers Can Inspire Brand Confidence

Brands need to create ever-more attention-grabbing visuals that communicate their benefits and/or features consistently and effectively. One subtle yet powerful technique is to embed hidden messages within designs, to reinforce brand identity and inspire confidence. Designers have integrated these elements for many years, so, using examples from well-known brands in the UK we thought we’d share a bit more insight in this article.

What Are Hidden Messages in Design?

Hidden messages are subtle visual cues or symbols that are embedded into a design. They influence by working on a subconscious level to bolster trust. The secret to their success though lies in subtlety—overt messages risk coming across as contrived.

The Power of Shapes and Symbols

Shapes and symbols are crucial to some brands’ messaging: the FedEx logo is a famous example, with its cleverly hidden arrow between the “E” and “x”, denoting speed and precision. Another great example is that of the London Symphony Orchestra logo, where the letters join to symbolise a conductor in motion, flowing with creativity and elegance. Amazon’s arrow, stretching from the A to the Z, outlines the company’s wide range of products, with the ‘smile’ showing its commitment to customer satisfaction.

Any good designer will use these techniques with brands of any size though, often trying to think beyond the obvious – unless the obvious is exactly what that particular brand needs!

    Colour Psychology

Colourschemes provoke differing emotions and the colour wheel is a designer’s ‘go to’ tool during the early stages of a brand development. Financial institutions, such as Lloyds Bank, often use green to convey growth and stability, while brands like Boots use blue to inspire trust and dependability. Designers should use colour to reinforce a brand’s values without overwhelming the viewer.

    Typography with Purpose

Typography (the use of different fonts, their spacing and weights) can also be used for hidden messaging. The Co-op logo’s interlocking circles convey community and collaboration. Designers have the ability to adapt typography to reflect these values, using space or customised lettering to reinforce a brand’s ethos.

    Patterns and Backgrounds

Backgrounds and patterns often go unnoticed, but can subtly shape our perception. John Lewis, for instance, uses clean, understated designs to emphasise quality and reliability. Subtle textures or organic patterns in branding materials can promote a mood or complement a brand’s narrative.

    Understanding Context and Audience

Knowing the target audience is essential when planning hidden elements. Cultural preferences, age groups and lifestyles all influence how messages are received. A minimalist approach might appeal to younger audiences, but traditional motifs could resonate more with older generations.

Top Tips for those Looking to Work with Designers

    1. Stay True to your Brand: Ensure any hidden elements reflect your brand’s core values and message. Never put them there just for the sake of it.
    2. Be Subtle: Avoid making elements too obvious; nobody wants something that’s trying too hard – it looks contrived.
    3. Test Your Design: Ask around for feedback to make sure your audience will see things the way you intended.
    4. Act Ethically: Never use misleading imagery or other people’s intellectual property (including photos) without permission.

In summary, done well, incorporating hidden messages can be a great way of enhancing a brand’s identity and trust. These embedded meaningful cues create visuals that resonate, inspire confidence and build loyalty with every glance.

Do you know a business that communicates as clearly as this pond water?

Have you come across a business whose message is as clear as murky water?

You: “Do you have a card please?”
Them: “Um, I’ve only got this one – sorry, it’s not great and is a bit grubby. I need to get some more done but I haven’t got round to it. Actually, I really need to get a logo too…”

You: “What do you do? I couldn’t quite tell from your presentation?”
Them: “Er, well, I, um save people money…”
    You: “Great – how?”
    Them: “Kdja kdmf lskd lksamfdlkml………”

Them: “I’m not getting anything from my brochure – not sure why I have it really…”

Us: Effective design isn’t just about something looking nice – it’s about underpinning a reputation that has taken a long time to build and getting the right message across to the right people!

  • 5 Signs Your Business Needs a Rebrand

5 Signs Your Business Needs a Rebrand

Is your brand as tired as this plant? Is it time for a fresh start?

Even the best brands need a little refresh every now and then. Whether you’ve been in business for years or things just don’t seem to be working anymore, here are five signs it might be time to rebrand.

    1. Your ‘Look and Feel’ Seems Outdated

If you’re wondering if your logo or website feels stuck in the past, the chances are your audience thinks so too. A little refresh can breathe new life into your business without the need for a full rebrand.

    2. You’ve Outgrown Your Brand

Maybe you’ve expanded your services, refined your offer, or changed direction completely. Your brand should reflect where your business is now, not where it started.

    3. You’re Not Standing Out

If your visuals blend in with the crowd—or worse, confuse people—it might be time to redefine your identity and carve out a clearer space in the market.

    4. Inconsistent Messaging or Design

If your brand feels a little ‘all over the place’ across the different platforms, a rebrand can bring everything back into alignment, making your business look more polished and together.

    5. You Don’t Feel Proud of It

If you’re ever hesitant to share your website or hand out your business card, listen to that instinct. Your brand should feel exciting and make you proud.

  • Choosing the Right Typeface for Your Business

Choosing the Right Typeface for Your Business

Typography: One of Our Favourite Bits of Graphic Design

When it comes to building a brand, the details matter—and typography is one of the most powerful tools in your visual toolkit. At Grafica by the Sea, choosing the right typeface is one of our absolute favourite parts of the design process. Why? Because it’s where personality, clarity and creativity all come together.

    Why Typeface Matters

Your typeface says a lot about your business before a single word is read. A classic serif font can convey heritage and trust—great for law firms or heritage brands—while a modern sans-serif communicates freshness and innovation, which can be perfect for start-ups, creative industries or eco-conscious brands. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with mixing it up a bit, but you get what we mean.

    Prioritise Legibility

Looks matter, but legibility comes first. Whether it’s a logo, website, or packaging, your font needs to be readable across all formats—from a smartphone screen to a printed leaflet, stylish should never mean hard to read.

    Consider Tone and Audience

Are you fun and friendly? Professional and precise? Your typeface should reflect your brand’s voice and values. A whimsical script might suit an artisan bakery, but not an accountancy firm. Knowing your audience is key to making the right choice. And a note on Comic Sans – it was designed for children because of the formation of the ‘a’. Please don’t make us use it anywhere else!

    Pair Wisely

Using more than one typeface can bring contrast and hierarchy—but too many fonts can look messy. We usually recommend one primary typeface with a complementary secondary option to keep your brand clean and cohesive – and never more than 3!

    Trust the Process

Typography is more than just picking a pretty font. It’s storytelling, tone-setting and identity-defining. You can probably now tell how passionate Brad is about type—whether you’re launching a new brand or freshening up your visual identity, he’ll help you find the perfect fit.

  • How Great Design Can Boost Your Small Business

    Because First Impressions Matter

At Grafica by the Sea, we believe design isn’t just about looking good—it’s about making an impact. For small businesses, great design can be the difference between being noticed… or overlooked.

    1. Builds Trust and Credibility

A polished, professional look tells customers you mean business. Whether it’s your logo, website or packaging, great design helps you appear established and reliable—even if you’re just starting out.

    2. Makes You Memorable

Good design sticks. From a distinctive brand colour to a unique font choice, thoughtful visuals help people remember your name—and where to come back for more.

    3. Communicates Clearly

Design is about more than aesthetics. It guides your audience, highlights what matters, and makes it easier for people to understand who you are and what you offer.

    4. Sets You Apart

In a crowded market, standing out is essential. Great design gives you a competitive edge and helps you connect with your ideal customers.
